How can we help you?

Close-Up Data Sheet

“My organization has lots of data but we’re not sure what to do with it.”

It sounds like you may need a data journalist to help you dig through the data and find the right story. Some stories are driven by words and others by visuals. Some stories reveal fresh insights, while others provide important context to a new development. We can help you strike the right balance.

“We want to create original data-driven content but don’t know where to start.”

The process may feel intimidating, but we will be there each step of the way. We typically begin by gathering and fact checking data sources, then running analytics to find juicy insights. Finally, we bring the numbers to life with compelling words and visuals that resonate with your audience.

“We want to ensure our charts follow best practices and meet accessibility standards.”

We offer audits of existing charts, noting where they fall short of best practices. We can develop a style guide that balances industry standards with your own style and brand. Finally, we offer training sessions so that everyone in your organization can produce clear, compliant, and effective charts.

Meet the Founder

Emily Barone is a communications expert who specializes in turning raw data into words and images that make sense to regular humans.

Emily has been a practicing data journalist for two decades. Back in her newsroom days, Emily ran the “data desk,” a literal desk where reporters and designers would collaborate on data-driven stories.  She spent her days analyzing databases to find trends and insights that had never been uncovered before. She turned those findings into visualizations and written stories for The Wall Street Journal, TIME magazine, CNN, and other national publications.

When she’s not building stories from data, she’s immersed in the latest trends and innovations in the data visualization industry. She has served as the managing editor of Nightingale, the Journal of the Data Visualization Society, and has edited four books about data visualization practices.

Emily is also working to train the next generation of data professionals in both academic and corporate settings. She loves teaching others how to use data for their own powerful storytelling.
